I have been blessed over the years to work with some of the most amazing bands in musical history. Some of that work has been designing artwork for display on the front drum heads of the drummer's kit. Being a musician myself, I understand how to design head art that projects to the audience further than the first four or five rows. Most custom drum head suppliers print directly onto the head, this results in pixellated and choppy/jagged graphics, and the reason they do this is to reduce their overhead of manpower and materials. I find that type of product unacceptable and self-defeating as the entire purpose of you spending money on custom drum heads is that people can make them up both close-up and far away. So, instead, I prefer to print the designs onto a high-grade vinyl to be mounted directly onto the face of the drum head, either by myself or by the client. This results in optimally-sharp and highly-readable graphics that can be viewed quite far back in any venue. When your band's image is as important to you as it is to me, this implementation is ideal for the best results possible. Oh, and let us not forget, using a graphic decal also tightens up your resonant head's tone, but also strengthens it so it'll give you many more years of service than a direct flatbed-printed head. |
